On October 14, 2017 the Calvary Chapel Grizzlies were looking to take the field with the visiting Flintridge Prep Rebels. Now, with this highly anticipated face off between two determined teams it was evident that the pressure was on the Grizzlies. With last week’s difficult loss to Sage Hill School, the Grizzlies were ready for another chance to solidify their season. The Grizzly’s starting quarterback Jacob Escalante was looking to lead his team to a victory against the Rebels. With a great supporting cast including Juniors Carlos Fuentes, Andrew Rangel, and Luke Manriquez the Grizzlyies had a great game plan to secure a win over the rebels . The Rebels were coming off a two game winning streak and looking to continue their momentum versus the Grizzlies. Both teams locked in and kick off was ready to go with Downey receiving first. The Grizzlyies took a commanding first half lead 22-6 with touchdowns from Jacob Escalante , and Luke Manriquez. It was looking very favorable heading into halftime, for Mike Nuno (Head Coach) with his message for his boys being “Keep doing what your doing, we are going to win this game!”. Coming out after half the Grizzlies defense was looking sharper then ever with one of the best secondary defenses in 8 man football, led by defensive coordinator Frank Manriquez. The Grizzlies forced 5 turnovers, with a scoop and score by Junior Andrew Rangel, who had 2 touchdowns on the day . The score was 30-6 with 8:44 left in the 3rd quarter, but it was far from over as the Rebels rallied back, led by Nick Davis, a 6’4 senior who had five receptions for 149 yards and two touchdowns. The Grizzlies found themselves in another crunch time situation. It was none other than Junior wide receiver Carlos Fuentes, who had a great defensive game along with 2 huge receptions for over 80 yards, that provided a spark for the Grizzlies. Now with a lead in the fourth quarter and time dwindling down the Grizzlies driving the ball with a huge second and ten, Luke Manriquez fought for a huge run to set up the Grizzly’s offense. The Grizzlies hoped to ice the game with one more huge play. Head coach Mike Nuno looked to give his Senior quarterback Jacob Escalante, who finished rushing for 151 yards on 20 carries with three touchdowns, while he completed seven of 15 passes for 144 yards the opportunity to close out the game. Escalante broke a huge touchdown run that would solidify the game with a final score of 48-42. What an awesome win on Homecoming night for the Grizzlies and their fans.
To God be the glory !
